Timeless Timepiece

The Century-Old Story

In the 18th and 19th Century, men typically carried pocket watches to keep time. Women were the ones, who wore wristwatches, as there were some technical and social barriers that prevented men from flaunting a timepiece on their wrist. Ironically, even in the present day and age, we tend to look at our gadgets and devices for the time. The Wristlet is inspired by that 19th century legendary design of wrist strap (also known as "Wristlet" back then) that was first used to house pocket watches onto the wrists, for the ease of checking time during Boer War era.

Need for Evolution

At first, pocket watches were adapted by being placed in leather cups with wrist straps. These wristlets let men wear their pocket watches on their wrist when required, and then return it to their pocket when they needed to conform to fashion rather than convenience. In short, during wartimes, it was easier to coordinate events based on a wrist-bound watch, than a pocket watch. Imagine fumbling for your pocket watch as a bullet whizzes past your ear!

Birth of The Wristlet Watch

The team at Waves Design Studio is big watch enthusiasts. History of watches intrigued them. Sometime ago their chief designer came across an article on Wristlet watches of 18th and 19th Centuries, which he found it very fascinating. “I started getting in touch with people like David Boettcher and Dr. Konrad Knirim, who has written books on Military Timepieces. I thought it would be cool to create a timepiece that depicts the origin of modern wristwatches.”

The Design Process

As explained by the team, “Pocket watches are usually in the range of 50mm+ and as you can imagine, housing a pocket watch of 50mm+ you would need a big leather cup. Along with the cup and outside seam on the leather would make the leather case diameter in the range of 55mm-60mm, which is pretty big for a wristwatch. On top of that, pocket watch "Bow" would always be protruding out of the strap.” In order to make a more manageable design the design team started by creating custom watchcases and built our wristlet prototypes around these cases. “Even though the base design is from 19th Century Wristlets watch, in our design we added elements like contrasting stitching and Sapphire Crystal to give it a more modern appeal.”
