Diagram 17 Watch

$140.00 USD

The Diagram 17 Watch draws its inspiration from a drawing of the same name by Wassily Kandinsky in 1925.

Wassily Kandinsky was an influential Russian painter and art theorist who is credited with painting some of the very first purely abstract paintings.

Drawing 17 and The Drawing 17 Watch has influences stemming from Gestalt psychology which tries to understand the laws of our ability to acquire and maintain meaningful perceptions in an apparently chaotic world.

Kandinsky's examinations of the effects of forces on straight lines and the contrasting tones of curved and angled lines, coincided with the research of Gestalt psychologists. Geometrical elements took on increasing importance in both his teaching and painting—particularly the circle, half-circle, the angle, straight lines and curves.

Kandinsky's creation of abstract work came toward the later part of his career and reflected on his past artistic experiences. He referred to his devotion to inner beauty as fervor of spirit, and described his spiritual desire to create as an inner necessity.

"Of all the arts, abstract painting is the most difficult. It demands that you know how to draw well, that you have a heightened sensitivity for composition and for colors, and that you be a true poet. This last is essential." - Kandinsky
